Overview

This program lays the foundation for reading instruction in kindergarten. It gets children off to a strong start, so they approach the process of learning to read with confidence and enthusiasm. The program has two primary goals. Students:

  • Build reading readiness skills
Children develop skills in three key areas - phonemic awareness, letter recognition, and beginning phonics.
  • Develop a love of books and reading
Children listen to wonderful picture books and participate in enrichment activities. These experiences, combined with their growing success with readiness skills, foster a love of reading and the motivation to learn to read.

The program meets once a week for five weeks. Parents attend class with their child and participate in a variety of activities in each of the areas described above. Parents receive a comprehensive Program Guide and DVD and a Reading Readiness Booklist, and come away from the program with resources to support their child's reading development throughout kindergarten.
