Program Guide and Program Guide DVD:
At the first lesson, parents receive a Program Guide that explains the program goals and materials and provides detailed guidance for supporting their child’s independent reading practice at home and for using the Quest phonics and word-attack workbook and CDs. The accompanying Program Guide DVD contains two 15-minute segments that explain all aspects of the program, including an overview of the stages of reading development.
Book-Level Recommendation and Reading Development Booklist:
Parents receive an individualized Book-Level Recommendation from the teacher, telling them which book level is best for their child’s independent reading. This recommendation works with the Reading Development Booklist, which organizes books into different levels of difficulty. The booklist serves as a resource for the child’s independent reading during the summer and throughout second grade. The booklist also includes a list of children’s novels for reading aloud.
Parent meetings:
At the end of Lesson 1, parents attend a brief introductory meeting in which the teacher gives an overview of the program and explains the weekly home practice. There is another parents’ meeting at the end of Lesson 4, where parents receive their child’s Book-Level Recommendation and learn how to use the Reading Development Booklist. A final meeting in Lesson 5 gives parents guidance about supporting their child’s reading development after the program.
Parents are always welcome to attend part or all of any lesson, to watch guided independent reading, discussions, phonics and word-attack instruction, and fluency training.
