PHONICS AND
WORD-ATTACK SKILLS
This program’s phonics and word-attack instruction consolidates what children have learned in first grade and introduces second grade phonics and word-attack skills. The goal of instruction is to teach children to decode accurately and automatically in order become fluent independent readers. Students come away from the program with the skills and confidence they need to meet the challenges of second grade phonics instruction.
This program includes a combination of in-class instruction and an engaging phonics and word-attack skills workbook, with accompanying CDs, called Pole and Vole and the Quest for the Book of Language.
In-Class Instruction:
In class, phonics instruction focuses on long vowel sounds, such as long vowels with silent e, and vowel digraphs such as oa, ai/ay, and ee/ea. Other word-attack skills include suffixes and spelling changes for inflected endings such as –ed and –ing.
Pole and Vole and the Quest for the Book of Language workbook and CDs:
This workbook is designed for children to use during the five-week program, both in class and at home, and then complete at their own pace after the program.
Workbook and CD instruction covers second grade phonics and word-attack skills, including vowel digraphs and diphthongs; r-controlled vowels; silent letters; prefixes, suffixes and inflected endings; contractions; and compound words.

A unique feature of this workbook is that skills are taught as part of an exciting adventure story about two friends, Pole and Vole, on a quest to rescue the Book of Language. Along the way, they use phonics and word-attack skills to solve problems. The story is told on three CDs, which also include instruction. The story also appears as an ongoing comic strip that runs throughout the workbook. When students read the comic strip, they gain valuable experience applying their skills in connected text.
The workbook is productive and a lot of fun; children are highly motivated to do each lesson and to use their developing skills alongside Pole and Vole as they complete their quest.
