Second grade is an important year for children, as they consolidate gains made in first grade, learn new phonics and word-attack skills, and become fluent independent readers. This program makes this process easy and positive for children and their parents.
To meet the needs of entering second graders, this program has four goals. Students will:
This program reinforces phonics skills learned in first grade and teaches second grade phonics and word-attack skills.
Students build fluency, the ability to read words smoothly, easily and accurately, without having to decode.
Guided discussions about characters and story structure increase students’ comprehension and enjoyment of the books they read.
Students practice reading in books at right level of difficulty and receive the support they need to experience success and build confidence.
The program meets once a week for five weeks. Parents receive resources to help them support their child’s reading development, including a comprehensive Program Guide and DVD, a Reading Development Booklist, and an individualized Book-Level Recommendation to guide them in selecting books at right level for their child’s independent reading.
